Pool (2019)

The installation “Pool” was shown in 2019 at the artist’s personal exhibition “Gudron i gnomy” (“Tar and Gnomes”; FUTURO gallery, Nizhny Novgorod) and in 2020 at the at the exhibition «More than Moscow» (The Manege Central Exhibition Hall, St. Petersburg) in the frame of the NEMOSKVA project

Vladimir Chernyshev alternates studio practice with the creation of land art. His graphic and pictorial works, objects and installations are united by a complex process: the construction of a sense of nature. The dramaturgy of the projects builds on the contrast between the natural and the human, both in the holistic artistic images and in the materials used to create them.

In a comment on “Pool”, the artist and curator Artem Filatov writes: “The installation — a perimeter resembling a pool filled with oil products — enables the artist to reveal contradictions in the relationship between nature and humanity. Nature with its elements, which can never be grasped fully, is subjected to attempts of domestication. Even if we try to think ecologically, the image of the world remains human-centric. The artist proposes another relationship to nature, one that proceeds from a presumption of ineffability and mystery. Experimenting with different substances and their combinations, he subjects them to endless transformations and endows them with variable meanings. The focus is not on the gems and highlights of natural landscapes […] Oil spills and burning forests become a full-fledged part of modern nature.”
