Edited by Lena Jonson and Andrei Erofeev

Routledge, 2019

This English-language collection edited by Lena Jonson and Andrei Erofeev is an up-to-date study of the cultural and political processes within the Russian art scene. Essays by Russian and non-Russian researchers and artists — including Ilya Kalinin, Alexander Bikbov, Peter Pavlensky, Jonathan Brooks Platt, Anna Titova, Stas Shuripa, and Maria Engström — examine Russian art post-2012 that takes a stand against authoritarianism and the conservatism of the modern state. Narratives on general cultural processes alternate with examples of individual creative strategies; the discussion of visual art is complemented by references to contemporary theatre practices.
