Gorky Automobile Plant (GAS)

The GAZ (Gorky Automobile Plant) was founded in Gorky City in 1932, at the time of industrialization. The plant’s history is closely connected with the history of Russia: it was the leading center of the Soviet car-making industry.
During perestroika it came across serious difficulties, but in 2000 the majority of shares were bought by Oleg Derepaska and Basic Element. This led to the complete reorganization of administration and production and, as a result, the plant became profitable by 2005. During the 2008 crisis, production was almost stopped.
Almost 80,000 of 100,000 workers lost their jobs. Now, only one out of four conveyors still works — and only on 2-3 days per month.
The plant has set up retraining programs for its workers aimed at teaching them new professions.
Inspired by the works of Ghanaian artists, painter Alexander Lavrov and two of his assistants — who had been fired from the GAZ and taken part in the retraining program — organized a small woodwork production company.

Many thanks for the constant support of the Redox firm and the Klim art studio.
