Филиппов Андрей Filippov Andrey

FilippovPortrait300B. in 1959 in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Filippov studied theatre design and production at the Studio School of the Moscow Art Theatre in 1976–1981. At the beginning of his artistic career, he was a fixture at the exhibitions of the APTART gallery and became a leading Moscow conceptualism artist of a new generation. In the late 1980s, he was one of the artists taking part in the first official shows of contemporary Russian art abroad, where his installations became a symbol of independent art.

In this work, the artist ponders on the role of a personality in history and on his own place therein. “Every one of us tries to reconstruct the future through the past. And the past, as well as the present, is the hub of a wheel, with our hopes projected on its rim. Both our ideas and images, and our passions spin inside the wheel, which is both a Buddhist prayer wheel and the corona lucis at an Orthodox church on Mount Athos.”The title of this romantic installation was borrowed from fellow artist Andrey Monastyrsky’s comment on Sociology, Art and Aesthetics of
the same name.
