The position I seek in art is old-fashioned: the artist as a naive naturalist, researcher, layman in search for knowledge.
Our world is becoming more complicated and tangled and so are our descriptions. We need to step back. To get involved in stupid and absorbing research in the field, which requires us to learn everything by ourselves and from the very beginning.
As a result we can obtain “soft” knowledge — knowledge that is too playful for science and not reflexive enough for contemporary art.
The “Azoic” project was done in this vein. The Azoic was a period of time on Earth when the biological, technological and cultural had yet to disintegrate into different forms of life. We must once again find this point of fusion. My goal is to make a list of chimeras that once populated the world and are now returning to it.
There are two ways to identify these beings. The first is to extract them from everyday life – so the Azoic is a street-cleaning machine and a flowerbed. It is a flock of teenagers doing parkour in a concrete box.
The second way is to invent and construct these creatures. The result is Azoids — imaginary species, ancestor chimeras, blueprints for life forms.
These two poles come together in this exhibition project. The Azoic is a museum of found and imaginary chimeras. It is a report about field research, artistic reconstructions, hypotheses and the analysis of results.
