Illustration No. 32 to the List of Bas Jan Ader

It is often artists themselves who create mythologies in art. Bas Jan Ader went missing at sea 36 years ago while performing “In Search of the Miraculous,” and became a legend in art history. Artists continue to reconstruct his performances: the notion of failure of “Fall”, the emotional intensity of “I’m Too Sad To Tell You” and the romanticism of the fatal “In Search of the Miraculous.” After watching a documentary about Bas Jan Ader and looking through documentation of his performances, I came under the influence of romantic and conceptual message of the artist and shot a video, “Unidentified Falling Objects (UFO).” It is a remake of the “Fall” performances for a mechanical creature on a windowsill who imitates its surroundings. The result of the UFO’s denial of its own identity in its attempt to take an alien shape is failure. Its failures bear the same name as Bas Jan Ader’s performances. Then I made a list of all the artists who reconstructed his performances. I am No. 32 in this list. The video installation “Illustration No. 32 for the Bas Jan Ader List” is comprised of a list-in-progress of artists and my reconstruction of the “Fall” performances.
