Media project Garden Zone

Laid in the very title The Zone of the Garden is internal dramaturgy which insists on the elevated, referring to high and tender matters — from the biblical to purely St. Petersburg ones, historically-cultural: garden-park culture, the poetry of gardens and so on.
But here the ZONE appears in its full diversity of connotations of the Soviet experience of the lack of freedom — prohibitions, camp-like isolation, exclusion from the normal way of life.
The project is made out of absolutely real materials. The photographs capture an abandoned place, not far from the military town — fortress of Kronstadt, enclosed by a temporary fence made out of pieces of sheet metal, cartridge boxes, planks, bundles of rusty camp wire, some old doors and other things.
The installation is created out of the same materials. This is the waste of the urban way of life, but specific, military — soviet, rusty, left as a reminder of lost power. Inbuilt plasma screens, over which images of the real fence move, let one really feel its endlessness in time and in space. In the project there is none of the Sots-art derision, although the element of socially-urban archaeology is present. But the image of the ZONE, presented in the project as a materialized impression of the consciousness of the military town in the period in between times, is transmitted as a frozen grimace of horror.
