Mechanisms of Time
The exhibition included several dozen series by Vitaly Pushnitsky that were arranged in a complex narrative structure, with a central plot and many additional subplots that formed a single story when taken as a whole. The curator (Sergei Popov) conceptualized the project as a ‘novel’, with numerous characters and plots presented on different floors of the Moscow Museum of Contemporary Art. Works came from several of Pushnitsky’s series that were essential in his evolution as an artist and that were borrowed from a number of state and private museums and significant Russian and European private collections. The exhibit also featured paintings that had never been shown before in Russia and works created specifically for the Museum of Modern Art. “Mechanisms of Time” was not merely a metaphor – it presented the dimensional models that emerge from Pushnitsky’s relationship with things and the surrounding world.
