Volga Volga is a most unconventional remake of Grigory Alexandrov’s hugely popular 1938 film of the same title, which was allegedly Stalin’s favorite film. Directed by Pavel Labazov and Andrey Silvestrov, this musical romantic comedy stars Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe as the postal worker Strelka. In the original version, the role of Strelka was immortalized by Soviet screen icon Lyubov Orlova. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that in this case Mamyshev-Monroe plays Orlova and Orlova plays Mamyshev-Monroe. The film is an altered version of the original copy, in which Orlova’s face (only her face, not her whole body) has been replaced by Mamyshev-Monroe’s in the editing room. Mamyshev-Monroe’s head talks, sings and dances Orlova’s part, through the entire film, with the exception of the main musical number, which the artist sings with a flock of penguins in the background.
