Fifteen Centimetres
The manual of standards and rules for the Russian construction industry specifies that the thickness of partition walls between rooms in an apartment should be 15 centimetres. So that is the separation between a child’s room and its parents’s room in a standard apartment. The physical measurement serves as a symbolic boundary between the world of the child and the world of adults. Fun and games can end at any moment on a gesture from the father, and the child goes to his or her room, leaving the adults alone with their secrets. This border is not impermeable. Strange sounds, snippets of conversations and tense whispering pass through the poorly insulated wall, rousing the child’s suspicions as to their nature and content. The fantastical mind of the child, still a novice in life, interprets and embellishes what it knows in search of a cause, a hidden power that controls events and the relationships between family members.
