Portraits of Heroes: Tove Jansson

The project Portraits of Heroes: Tove Jansson was intended as documentary evidence of the hidden world of trolls and their way of life. Trolls live somewhere on the edge of the world, on the island of oblivion, in the valley of tranquility, enclosed by the sea, cliffs, impenetrable forests and bogs on all sides. Trolls are very similar to people, but they do not have the main pernicious human emotion — passion. They are calm, all their questions are resolved, they quietly feast their eyes upon the world, sometimes they study it with the extreme curiosity of first discoverers. They are not afraid of death — perhaps they are already in paradise. Perhaps they look like lepers — because they live on the other side of fear and vanity. Perhaps they are simply from another planet — and we’ll never be able to understand how they live. Perhaps they simply remain children for the whole of their lives, children who take the most simple things and games seriously, — and don’t pay particular attention to “problems”.
Trolls live in northern regions, where the wind always blows and because of this there are tears in the eyes and the skin is covered with warm fluff. They are dressed in comfortable warm clothes, drink hot tea with jam, and in the winter they hibernate in order to avoid encountering the cold and emptiness. The magic of the most simple things and phenomena surrounds these beings. Their understanding of beauty may somewhat surprise us.
