Russian Alienated

In this project the artist speculates about the concepts of Russian folk and “alienated” in the mass consciousness, interweaving them with her personal real and artistic worlds.

“?” is not just the name of the project, it is the name of the artist’s state at the exact moment. She marks a certain layer of her artworks with this state.

The first work of the series appeared spontaneously, but it revealed the whole idea of the conceptual statement. This is a small digital photo collage, where the artist runs with a dog in a field of her home village Yakshina. The face behind the mask hangs in the sky above them. If you look closely, you can see the artist herself behind the mask. Later the image wandered from the world of digital photo collages and video art, where the artist appeared to the viewer at the same time in the image of a little human and a goddess, the keeper of the world where her miniature copy lives, to textile masks, in which elements of Russian folk culture refracts in the prism of her personal world.

This project was also presented in the form of the exhibition — a total installation, which location was the village Yakshina, where the artist was born. The place got a new meaning, it became the one big object, the animate embodiment of the artist’s statement. She is closely connected with the art she creates, therefore, the project in the native village became a logical return to her roots and a personal story in the artist’s visual language.
