«La Blanca»
While I was in Mexico I had an acute sense of my foreignness and conspicuousness. The “La Blanca” installation was a means to visually express the feeling of being an alien, a person on show. I set up the space as a light installation. The space was an abandoned flour mill, consisting of a suite of rooms covering an area of approximately 120 square meters. I made a hole in the roof through which light entered the room. At noon the light formed precise rectangles. These rectangles started to move across the floor and at a certain point combined with flat geometric shapes on the floor, which repeated the rectangular shape of the sunbeams. They were made of local, natural materials – flowers, feathers, leaves. The culmination was a moment of complete alignment of the sunbeams and floor shapes, and at that moment the space of every room was vividly colored. The highlighting of the floor shapes conveyed my impression of being the subject of attention. My installation was organized as a path among the suite of rooms, symbolizing travel in a foreign country.
