How I spent the Summer.Project-catastrophe
All of us played war games in childhood and in September wrote compositions on the theme “How I spent the summer”. We felt free from distant military operations, regardless of what kind of news from “hot spots” accompanied our childhood (albeit reports in the programme “Vremya” about the Vietnam War or reports about the conflict in Afghanistan).
The modern media space does not leave any possibility to us, the adult people, to abstract ourselves from what is going on with the same children’s spontaneity.
Vita Buivid’s project is just about that: about an ideal world, which is falling apart because even it can be invaded by an enemy force.
It can be considered socially sharp, topical, on the background of war in Ossetia, but this impression will be partially erroneous. However, the topicality does not depreciate the artistic merits of the series.
The author’s position is similar to Hollywood disaster films: it was good and nice, then it became terrible, and then Bruce Willis came and corrected everything.
The prints are made from 1970s negatives, stored in a family archive. Printed on fabric and manually oil-painted, it is difficult to identify whether these works are photographs or paintings. The definition “mixed media” is strengthened by images of troops, sewn using large stitches. This is no longer collage, but patches of non-artistic reality.
Fortunately, these horrors are only tacked on. It is supposed that peace can be achieved in the simplest of ways, — when you pull a thread, you will restore the idyll, it’s just that hardly noticeable contours will remain on the canvas – the holes from the sewn on soldiers, and their invisible presence will stay with us.
