Haim Sokol (1973, Arkhangelsk). Artist, professor at the Moscow Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia, and a member of the editorial board of the Moscow Art Magazine. Graduated of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (MA) and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Moscow. The artist works with installation, sculpture, and video. His art addresses the topics of alienation and isolation in the modern world. While working with archival materials and private documents, the artist reveals the history of the twentieth century through the private destinies, explores the problems of historical memory and the current socio-political situation. Artist’s solo shows took place at the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, CCI Fabrika and in the Triumph, M&J Guelman and Anna Nova Galleries. The artist participated in numerous exhibitions in Russia and abroad, including the II Kiev Biennale (2015), the I Indian Biennale in Kochi-Muziris, India (2012), the III Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2009). Lives and works in Moscow.

Paper Memory

A factory of technical paper “October” was founded in 1929. After the Soviet times it turned out to be an art-claster, a center of creative industries “Fabrika” and everything has changed here a lot for the past 10 years. But the space itself doesn’t let us to forget the past of the factory and people who used to work there.

In Russian “paper” has two possible meanings: it is a document and a material. And this is what influenced the artist the most. For more than three months, the artist has researched the factory’s archive, where a plenty of documents have been kept: personal files, applications, orders. As the result of this research the artist presented a series of poetic and graphic artworks, and also videos. The main heroes of these works are the late factory workers. And the main material is the paper that used to be produced here some time ago.
