The series Willows and Olives
“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see Nature as all ridicule and deformity, and some scarce see Nature at all. But to the eyes of the man with imagination, Nature is imagination itself.” So wrote the English poet William Blake in 1799 and indeed in the Romantic movement of the late 18th and early 19th century the appreciation of Nature was the appreciation of the soul.
In the Old Testament olive oil was used to anoint important prophets and kings while early Christians were called Nozreem or Masseheen, which in the Aramaic language means ‘anointed with olive oil’. Conversely the willow tree is more associated with pagan religions. The Druid cults of the past identified the willow with death and rebirth. Within the realm of Vertinskaya’s paintings these two ancient trees represent the twin sides of her personality as well as her spiritual sense of self. Combining a series of montage techniques, she first prepares the surface of each new painting by pasting on top of each other old engravings, notes, maps and architectural plans, all forms of thought written and printed on paper. The final paintings complete the circle and lead us back towards a reversal of faith. From the complex to the simple and back again we stand before the timelessness of nature coupled with the serenity of being.
